IDLERS

An idler used in V-Belt drives is a wheel that is not 'loaded' and may be grooved flat pulley used for various reasons such as:

  1. To provided take up for fixed center drivers.
  2. To clear obsrtuction.
  3. To turn corners as in mule pulley drive.
  4. To break up long spans where belt vibration

Idlers should be placed as closed to the pulley from wheel to belt leaving the pulley.

NOTE: Diameter of outside idler should be 1.5 times that of smaller pulley diameter or more and diameter of inside idler should be approximately equal to smaller pulley diameter or more.

INSTALLATION AND TAKE UP ALLOWANCE
  1. The limiting values for adjustment of centers for the two transmission pulley shall be as follows:
    • LOWER LIMITING VALUE: Nominal center distance minus 1.5% pitch length.
    • HIGHER LIMITING VALUE: Nominal center distance plus pitch length.
  2. Where Lp is the pitch length of the belt.
SUGGESTION FOR BETTER SERVICE
  1. Belts should be stored in a cool and dry place.
  2. Avoid placing belt on the floor or ground.
  3. Belt should be hung on racks. Avoid storing in a heavy bent condition.
  4. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Keep the belts away from oil, grease and dust.
INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF V-BELTS
  1. Do not use of different make in multiple belt drive.
  2. The groove should be free from buns, sharp edges, rust oil and grease and all dimensions should confirm to standard.
  3. Ensure perfect alignment of shaft and pulleys.
  4. Tension the drive properly, give belts some running time to become seated in sheave grooves then readjust take up, if necessary.
  5. Check bearing for oil.
  6. To extract high caliber performance particularly from the wedge type belt, it is imperative to check the tensioning of the belts.
  7. Reduce the center distance until the belts put into pulley groove without forcing.
  8. While using banded belts it is advisable to keep the drinig unit covered with belt guard.
  9. Ensure that correct pulley are used as per the appropriate standard for fitment of banded belts.
